From first reflection to evening silhouette, a photographic day following changing light across the Drakensberg.

When the Berg Wakes

Before the Drakensberg becomes dramatic, it is often quiet. Early light arrives slowly, touching water, grass and distant ridges before the mountains fully reveal themselves.

First light

Morning simplifies the landscape. Reflections hold still, valleys remain cool and the first warmth begins to separate one ridge from another.

The day opens

As the sun climbs, texture returns. Grassland, wetlands and rock begin to catch light differently. The mountains stop being a silhouette and become a landscape of layers.

Last light

Toward evening the detail disappears again. Hills become shapes and trees become silhouettes. A full day of changing colour and texture returns to something simple.
